My daughter, Kristin, wanted a parakeet. Even though I really wanted a bird too, I told her no, that they were messy and that human's can get sick from breathing in their "poop" dust. We had a neighbor that was admitted to the hospital for a severe lung infection due to her daughter's bird.
I am divorced and my daughter's Dad bought her a parakeet for her birthday, anyway. Of course, I couldn't tell her she couldn't have it so it stayed. Then her sister wanted one and also her brother. So, they each got one and kept them in their rooms. After a few months they all made the decision that each bird needed a "friend". Off we went to the store to get each one a "friend" and the promise from all three of them that they would keep the cages clean. They had to buy bigger cages with their allowance.
The following year, Kristin's Dad bought her a cockateil and an even bigger cage. I totally fell in love with this bird. He copied all my whistles and was so friendly and social.
About a year later, the kids and I went to the local bird store just to buy some food and look at bigger birds. There was a crazy cockatoo running all around his cage, laughing and being a clown. We all just loved him. The owner of the store said he wasn't the best with kids but had a baby waiting to go home. My husband met us at the bird store and we ended up buying him and finished hand feeding him! He was adorable at 5 months! Only a year later, we were bitten hard by the bird bug and went and got an African Grey, then four months later got another African Grey that was put up for sale after being boarded for four months. We also got a mate for the cockateil.
And all this because my ex-husband bought a single parakeet! We all love our birds so much and have so much fun with them. They bring so much joy and laughter into our lives. I always had a fascination for birds but never would have thought I'd own 11 of them at one time! They are named Kiwi, Lola, Bu, Bo, Tammy, Taffy, Joey, Sera, Tiki, Scooter and Smokey. And now...we are thinking..just maybe.. getting a Hyacinth...All of our neighbors think we are "wierdo's!"
